HVS Company held a naming ceremony for the 50,000 DWT oil tanker – S556
On December 4, 2025, at HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding Company Limited (HVS), a joint venture between Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC) and HD Hyundai Group of South Korea, a solemn naming ceremony was held for the 50,000 DWT oil tanker, designated S556, for its owner, Mitsui, Japan.
The ceremony took place in a solemn atmosphere with the attendance of HVS General Director Jin Sang Ho; Mr. Tran Manh Ha, General Director of the Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. On the shipowner's side were Mr. Akira Maekawa, representative of Mitsui Company; Mr. Itsumi Fukura, Chairman of Fukuyo Group; and Mr. Masakazu Toyoshima, Director of Hyakujushi Bank, who named the S556 vessel "Um Kiso".
The Um Kiso vessel is 183.06m long, 32.2m wide, 19.1m high, has a speed of 14.5 knots, a Hyundai main engine, is registered under NK classification society, flies the Panamanian flag, was constructed in 12 months and delivered on the same day it was named. Um Kiso is the ninth oil tanker in a contract for 21 50,000-ton oil tankers. Mitsui is currently HVS's largest partner.
The S556 vessel belongs to the new generation of oil/chemical product carriers, designed to international standards and fully meeting safety, technical, and environmental protection requirements. The 50,000 DWT vessel was constructed by HVS with high speed, strict quality control, and the application of many advanced Hyundai technologies. At the ceremony, representatives of the shipowner performed the traditional naming ritual, marking an important milestone in the completion of the vessel. Speaking at the event, the HVS leadership affirmed that the completion and naming ceremony of the S556 further confirms HVS's capabilities and reputation in the medium-sized oil tanker segment – one of the shipyard's flagship products in the international market.
The naming ceremony was a great success, creating a favorable foundation for HVS to continue accelerating the completion and preparation for the testing and handover of the vessel in accordance with the commitment to the shipowner.
