Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company launched a ship ordered by a Korean partner.
According to the latest report by Acumen Research and Consulting (ARC), a prestigious international market research and consulting firm, the value of global shipbuilding will reach 147.2 billion USD in 2022. In 2024, this figure will reach 152.58 billion USD. It is forecasted that by 2032, this figure will be 226.9 billion USD.
European yards focus mainly on cruise ships, luxury yachts and military vessels, accounting for 7% of total global shipbuilding orders in 2023.
Key markets such as container ships and bulk carriers are currently dominated by China and South Korea. This opens up opportunities for Vietnamese shipbuilding enterprises to participate in market segments and products that are suitable to their capacity.
One of the enterprises that has closed the most orders is Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company, Hai Phong. At the end of 2022, Y-ENTEC Company (Korea) signed a contract with Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company to build 3 new 13,000-ton chemical ships, coded YN01/02/03. In July 2023, Y-ENTEC signed an additional contract with Pha Rung to build 2 new 13,000-ton ships, coded YN04/05.
In March 2024, the Company continued to sign a contract to build ships No. 6 and No. 7, code YN06/07. On the launching day of ship YN01, Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company continued to sign a contract with partner Y-ENTEC to build a new 13,000-ton ship No. 8, code YN08. This is the contract to build a new series of ships with the largest number of ships that Pha Rung has ever had.
Mr. Vu Huu Chien, General Director of Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company, shared that with just the contract to construct 8 oil/chemical tankers with a Korean partner and other repair and new construction products, the Company has work until mid-2029.
Following the success of Pha Rung, on January 5, 2025, Viet Thuan Transport Company Limited and Pacific Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company jointly held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project to build 8 new international unrestricted ships. These 8 ships have a total investment of over 2,600 billion VND, including: 2 ships with a capacity of 36,000 DWT, 3 ships with a capacity of 26,000 DWT, and 3 ships with a capacity of 11,000 DWT.
This is an unlimited series of ships, newly built as part of the plan to diversify means of transporting bulk cargo, supplementing the fleet of specialized cargo ships for the development orientation of Viet Thuan Group in the following years.
Mr. Le Doan Tam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pacific Shipbuilding Corporation, said that the world's maritime industry is currently moving towards "greening", shipbuilding enterprises will focus on producing ships with high technical standards, applying green technology and using clean fuel.
Previously, at the end of 2024, Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Company handed over a 65,000 DWT ship to the investor. This is the largest bulk carrier product newly built by a Vietnamese enterprise, in a series of 4 65,000 DWT ships invested by Dong Bac Shipbuilding Industry Joint Stock Company.
According to Mr. Pham Trung Tuyen, Acting General Director of Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Company Limited, the successful handover of the 65,000 DWT cargo ship is an important milestone, demonstrating the outstanding capacity of the staff and technical workers in the company. Because the ship is up to 199.99 m long, 32.2 m wide, with a total capacity of 35,823 GT; designed by a Finnish partner.
The ship is equipped with many modern equipment, meeting international convention standards and inspected by NK (Japan). The ship can operate in all sea areas and meets the conditions for docking at all seaports in the world.
To ensure the progress of the construction of the next ships in the series of 4 65,000 DWT ships, the Company has been making efforts to mobilize human resources, invest in modern equipment as well as improve management capacity, proactively apply scientific and technological achievements, and digital transformation into production and business activities.

According to Deputy Director of Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration Hoang Hong Giang, Vietnam's shipbuilding industry currently ranks 7th in the world, capable of building most types of general cargo ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, and car carriers.
Vietnam is also a country with a young, skilled, easily trained workforce and competitive labor costs compared to other countries with strong shipbuilding industries in the Asian region such as Korea, China, etc.
